Dizzy’s Diner has been serving Park Slope diners, young and old, classic comfort food ever since they were established in 1998. But make no mistake, this ain’t your Momma’s tuna mac casserole. Dizzy’s is owned by Matheo Pisciotta and Ben Hoen; two regular guys who have simply loved food and the wonderful feelings and memories a great meal can create. Since Matheo And Ben were youngsters they have been cooking food that not only satisfies the palate but also the soul. Whether it was Ben’s stove top burgers slung at the age of 8 or Matheo serving up his mid-western favorite after school delights of bb’q fried bologna on Wonder Bread,or the infamous potato chip sandwich made with the correct press of the palm of your hand; both recognize how certain food can nostagically bring you right back home. Matheo and Ben wanted to bring comfort food made with love to the Park Slope community; and thus a finer diner was born. Over the years Dizzy’s has been recognized for it’s culinary creations being named Best Brunch” by New York Magazine and featured on the Food Network’s “Best of…” series. Ben and Matheo take a great deal of pride in the food they serve and create, using only the finest and freshest ingredients available and always crafting these ingredients into delights that would make your momma proud. They both agree, that even with all the attention they have received, the finest reviews come in the smiles you see from the guests at Dizzy’s and their desire to return to Dizzys time and time again.
Dizzy’s is owned by Ben Hoen and Matheo Pisciotta veterans of the restaurant industry since their formative years. Ben started his restaurant career washing dishes and cooking for the family. After biking through Europe and eating from the head of a goat (a story for another time!) Ben was so inspired, upon his return he headed to NYC and enrolled in the Peter Kump’s cooking school (now the Institute of CUlinary Education). After school Ben worked in many distinguished kitchens including a stint with Bobby Flay at Mesa Grill. Matheo on the other hand grew up in St’ Louis and came to New York to hang with his best friend (a reason as good as any to leave home). He began to work in many New York City restaurants and worked his way through the ranks. Matheo then decided to attend the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to formalize his skills and hone his talents. After CIA, Matheo worked within the Steve Hanson empire and held numerous executive chef positions while developing his culinary savvy. Matt and Ben soon found themselves at a local caterer in Park Slope and it was love at first sight. After a night of one to many cocktails Ben and Matheo decided it was time to bring their culinary machinations to the world or at least the world of Park Slope. They hatched a plan to combine their love for simple home cooking and their extensive culinary backgrounds for a Park Slope diner called Dizzy’s.
The idea of Dizzy’s met with opportunity and a little Dizzy luck when Ben and Matheo stumbled on the news the Park Towne Coffee Shop was up for sale and realized it would be a perfect location for Dizzy’s. Benny’s (ironically as it was called at the time) was an institution in the neighborhood and there are still many locals who fondly remember the place. The original coffee shop letters hang in Dizzy’s as a homage to this past Park Slope institution. Dizzy’s with its vibrant colors and local artists, whose work hangs on the walls, has tried to create the right vibe for a homey contemporary diner. Those who know Dizzy’s call it our Dizzy’s ”Waa” and it is important to Matheo and Ben that all who enter Dizzy’s feel the ”Waa”. They want you to be greeted with a smile, some excellent jazz music, and the anticipation of a great meal and fabulous service. Dizzy’s aims to provide its neighbors with a refuge from the hustle and bustle by serving comfort food classics seven days a week. It is this commitment which has made Dizzy’s such an integral part of the Park Slope Community. Everyone loves Dizzy’s.
Even after almost 10 years Ben and Matheo are working hard to create new original menu items for guests of all ages to enjoy and smile about. But they never forget the loyal following of long standing favorites like the Tuna Mac Daddy, the Eggs Bene-dizz, Dad’s Favorite Meatloaf, Dizzy fries and the famous Corned Beef Hash, just to name a few. Matheo and Ben do not ever want to take their customer’s for granted because they believe they are not just serving customers they are serving their guests, in an extension of their home, called Dizzy’s. So grab the F train and enjoy! And, perhaps soon there might be a Dizzy’s in your neighborhood. To be continued . . .
